Road Safety
For too long, road safety has been something our representatives talk about when it’s already too late. It seems like every few months there’s a new tragedy at an already notorious intersection or crosswalk.
When I was a child, a girl my age was hit and killed at Weston & Eglinton. Three years ago, I was hit by a truck while riding my bike at Weston & Lawrence and almost died. When it comes to road safety, I literally feel it in my bones.
Talking to neighbours across YSW year after year, I hear from parents nervous about their kids playing near the road, cars speeding down residential streets, blind spots, no sidewalks, the list goes on.
There’s no reason our streets should feel so dangerous.
I’ve already done road safety audits at the following intersections:
- Weston and Lawrence
- Jane and Runnymede
- Black Creek and Trethewey
- Keele and Lawrence
- Weston and Eglinton
As your City Councillor, I’ll fight for short and long term road safety measures.
Short term fixes include:
- Adding or modifying road paint (stop bars, zebra stripes, centre lines, slip lanes, bike lanes)
- Crosswalk push buttons and indicators
- Adding or updating signage and speed limits
- Advance turn and pedestrian lights
- Bollards and artificial islands
Long-term solutions include:
- Raised crosswalks
- Raised intersections
- Adding sidewalks and multi-use trails
- Curb cuts, truck aprons and modifying turn radii
- Repositioning or improving bus stops
Transit
I ride the TTC every day, so like many of my neighbours I know how important a safe, accessible and reliable transit system is for our community.
As City Councillor I’ll work to:
Keep transit affordable
- Maintain the TTC fare freeze
- Expand free public transit to people who need it
- Continue the Fair Pass Transit Discount Program
Make transit reliable
- Expand 10-minute-or-better service across the entire TTC network
- Fully fund the RapidTO plan, and especially the Jane Street priority corridor
- Pursue stable, ongoing funding for public transit from provincial and federal governments, especially for operating funds
- Keep Transit Public
Ensure transit is accessible
- Protect and expand door-to-door Wheeltrans service
- Improve snow and ice clearing at bus and Wheeltrans stops
