Newsletter - April 2020

I hope you and yours are keeping well in these unprecedented times. I'm including some resources in this update that may be useful during this time and I encourage you to reach out if you need help.

On a personal note, some of you may know that at my day job I coordinate a network of food banks across northern Toronto with North York Harvest Food Bank. The last few weeks have been especially challenging as the demand for food banks has increased because of COVID-19.

Despite these difficult times, I've seen how quickly our community can come together to support one another. It's an honour to work side by side such an incredible team every day.

If you would like to support North York Harvest Food Bank with a donation in this time of need, please click here

COMMUNITY UPDATES

York South-Weston Tenants Win Ban on Evictions

We did it together, Chiara ! Thanks to thousands of people like you, Premier Ford has officially announced a halt on evictions during the COVID-19 crisis. This means no one should loose their homes during this crisis. If you are served an eviction notice or threatened with eviction, please let me know.

This was an important first step in protecting people's homes during COVID-19. Check out the op-ed I co-authored with Jessica Parish in the Toronto Star to see what else we're fighting for.

TAKE ACTION

Make Noise for Frontline Workers!

Our community is full of workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 emergency. Let's help them by staying home, flattening the curve and cheering them on every night at 7:30PM as they continue to provide our community with essential services and save lives.

Support Local Businesses - Even from Home!

During this emergency, it's important that we continue to support local business. My husband Bruno and I have recently enjoyed delicious meals from Comal y Canela and Ginger Pho, craft beer from Shacklands and the Good Food Box from Foodshare all delivered right to our door. If you are a business needing support during the COVID-19 emergency, see if you qualify for the Temporary Wage Subsidy for Employers from the Canadian government.

PROGRAMS & RESOURCES

I've updated my website with a resource page to help navigate what resources are available to members of our community.

Some Relief on your Bills

The government of Ontario has eliminated mid-peak and on-peak electricity rates for 45 days, which means you should see the off-peak hydro rate on your next hydro bill. The City of Toronto has introduced a 60-day grace period for the payment of property tax, water and waste bills, so you can postpone paying those bills at a later date. The government of Canada has extended the filing due date for 2019 income tax returns until June 1, 2020. For more information on relief on utility bills, click here

Emergency Food Support

At North York Harvest Food Bank, my colleagues and I have been working hard to keep food banks operating safely during the COVID-19 crisis.

Novedades York Memorial C.I. & George Harvey C.I.

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, people sitting and food

Every March 8th the world comes together to commemorate International Women's Day, a day to celebrate and remember the contributions of women around the world and take action for gender equality.

Here in York South-Weston, local organizations have teamed up to organize "Caring for our Communities, Caring for Ourselves" to celebrate women working in the nonprofit sector.

Join me this Friday as I moderate a discussion with some incredible women working for our community while fighting for decent work in the sector.

COMMUNITY UPDATES

Residents Fight for Judicial Review 200 Rockcliffe Court Sale

For decades our community has been denied the flooding mitigation we deserve. In 2017, our Councillor actually supported the sale of public land in the floodplain to one of her biggest campaign donors so he could expand his meatpacking business. Our community deserves better and we're fighting for it. Learn more about the York South–Weston Flooding Accountability Coalition here.

Update on York Memorial C.I. & George Harvey C.I.

The Toronto District School Board is currently in the midst of a "Pupil Accommodation Review" of York Memorial and George Harvey that is recommending the consolidation of both schools. As a proud York Memorial graduate, I want to see this important institution rebuilt, and as our community grows and develops, it's important both schools remain open to meet our community needs. Students and parents of George Harvey and York Memorial are encouraged to attend the TDSB meetings at both schools to have their voices heard. Save our Schools!

Here in York South-Weston, I'd like to highlight Black Women in Theatre, a showcase featuring several Black artists including York South-Weston resident, Anyika Mark and her piece "Making Moves", portraying a day in the life of young, Black people in Toronto’s West-end.

COMMUNITY UPDATES

York South-Weston Tenants officially launched last week at the first ever Tenant Summit in York South-Weston with over 100 tenants in attendance. Update on York Memorial C.I. & George Harvey C.I.

The TDSB is recommending that York Memorial and George Harvey merge at the current George Harvey location in 2021 until a new school can be built, at which point both schools would consolidate in the new building. As a proud graduate of York Memorial C.I., I really want to see the school get rebuilt, but not at the expense of closing and selling off George Harvey. As we plan for the future of Keelesdale and Mount Dennis, public schools and public space will be important community assets as our community grows and develops. Stay tuned into Keelesdale Neighbourhood Group for opportunities to get involved.

Community solidarity with 22 John and 33 King

In an incredible show of community solidarity, dozens of local community organizations signed onto a letter expressing solidarity with tenants in 22 John and 33 King Street who are facing extremely high rent increases. Unfortunately, Rockport still hasn't even responded to the letter. Show your support of our neighbours by retweeting and sharing the letter.
