We are losing too many to Toronto’s gun violence crisis. York South-Weston needs all levels of government to step up and address the root causes of gun violence.
I support the call for a city-wide handgun ban, but that’s not the only measure needed: proactive & meaningful measures to address gun violence have been recommended by leaders from marginalized communities in the city for years. It’s time City Hall listened to them.
York South-Weston needs and deserves access to affordable and adequate transit and housing; decent and local jobs; modest and convenient childcare; and real opportunities for youth. These are real crime-fighting measures.
The Toronto Youth Equity Strategy, which is not fully-funded, has 28 key themes. Many of these themes address violence. Theme 20 notes that “some youth most vulnerable to involvement in serious violence and crime do not access any of the City’s services.”
We know real and meaningful crime prevention solutions comes from real investment in our communities, especially our young people. We need address the inequitable access to supports and opportunities in the City. We need to do better.
